Australian Financial Review; New options for men’s flow problems

The Wesley Hospital has long been recognised as the centre of excellence in diagnosing and managing prostate disease. The level of expertise and the unique partnership between the Urologists and Radiologists combined with state of the art surgical and diagnostic equipment has enabled the Wesley to successfully offer many men suffering from prostate disease a longer life expectancy and an improved quality of life. An Australian first trial on Prostate Artery Embolisation for benign prostate disease, or BPH< Benign Prostate Hyperplasia, a common problem for men in their middle ages and beyond, shows promising outcomes in the data released earlier this month as published in the Australian Financial Review .

Sunshine Coast Medical Imaging, a sister company to Wesley Medical Imaging, commenced business at The Sunshine Coast Private Hospital at Buderim in January 2015. In December 2015, SCMI commenced the first PET-CT service available on the Sunshine Coast. SCMI made the decision to not delay this important service to this area, noting issues with manufacturers and new system availability. SCMI continued with their plan to commence this service by installing a PET-CT from our partner company until our brand new GE Discovery* PET/CT 710 became available.

When will this happen?

SCMI endeavours to have the new PET-CT up and running by Monday 19th December 2016.

Will there be any interruptions to current service?

Our PET-CT service will be unavailable from 23rd November until 19th December 2016. During this time, referrers may wish to direct any PET-CT referrals that are required to be completed before 19th December to our sister company in Brisbane, Wesley Medical Imaging.

What does this mean?

The Discovery PET/CT 710’s enhanced speed, power and accuracy provides low dose, high image quality and reliability

Improved PET-CT service with minimal delays and interruptions

Faster, efficient scan time for patients

More efficient and timely scheduling of patients

One of the most advanced PET-CT scanners available featuring high sensitivity, advanced protocol flexibility and high-definition image reconstruction

Will anything change else change with this service?

There will be no other changes to our service – our onsite dual trained Radiologist/Nuclear Medicine & PET-CT Specialist, Professor Ken Miles, will continue to be supported by our Nuclear Medicine & PET-CT Specialist Doctors from Wesley Medical Imaging. All Medicare eligible PET-CT scans will continue to be bulk-billed.

Sunshine Coast Medical Imaging located at The Sunshine Coast Private Hospital, along with the experienced Radiologists from sister company, Wesley Medical Imaging, are pleased to support the establishment of the first Australian Reference Centre for UroNav in Buderim. SCMI commenced business at The Sunshine Coast Private Hospital in January 2015, and has one of the most advanced 3T MRI scanners available. Our sister company Wesley Medical Imaging, located at The Wesley Hospital, boasts a highly experienced team of Radiologists involved in a world-first clinical trial for prostate cancer diagnosis. The Wesley Hospital is a recognised Centre of Excellence for prostate imaging and care.

Dr Tony Gianduzzo has established the Reference Centre for Australia’s first UroNav prostate biopsy system – the leading MRI / Ultrasound software-fusion device in USA. This high quality prostate cancer diagnostics service is supported by world-class prostate MRI and internationally recognized uropathology services. The UroNav system has been installed at The Sunshine Coast Private Hospital at Buderim.

UroNav brings the power of MRI to the Urology suite as prostate and lesion segmentation data from Radiology are quickly and easily transferred to UroNav for review and target identification. This critical exchange of diagnostic information fosters enhanced collaboration between Radiology and Urology in the assessment and biopsy of suspicious prostate lesions.

After 53 years since qualification and 49 years as a Radiologist, I have decided, with mixed feelings, to retire. My last day with Sunshine Coast Medical Imaging will be 29th June 2016.

These 49 years have been an amazing ride with the technological advances in radiology from such primitive techniques as air encephalograms for the investigation of brain masses, direct “stick” carotid angiograms and fluoroscopy in the dark, to what we have today. I was privileged to witness the first CT brain scan at the Atkinson Morley Hospital in London in 1971 on a prototype scanner which took 8 seconds per slice that did away with air encephalograms forever.

I have really enjoyed my pain management work, and especially enjoyed my association with the many referrers over the years.

My decision to leave has been made so much easier with the enthusiasm and emergence of Dr Sally Johnstone as my exit strategy. Sally has been working with me for the past 18 months and I am so impressed with her skills. I believe she is the right person to take over the advanced pain management and interventional procedures at SCMI. She not only has great interventional skills, but she is compassionate and competent and has the right temperament to deal with this facet of patient care.

So I want to thank all of my referrers for their support over the years. I wish you well and bid you farewell.

Yours faithfully,

Dr Russell (Gus) Ferguson

Sunshine Coast Medical Imaging (SCMI), a subsidiary of Wesley Medical Imaging, is pleased to announce that the installation of Sunshine Coast’s first PET/CT (Positron Emission Tomography/Computed Tomography) scanner has been completed, with scanning having commenced on the 24th November. The installation of the PET/CT at Sunshine Coast Medical Imaging will enable local residents, and those living north of Brisbane an option closer to home, to undergo the advanced imaging procedures.

Currently the closest available PET/CT centres are located in Brisbane and Townsville, requiring significant travel for regional patients. The availability of the PET/CT scanning service at Sunshine Coast Medical Imaging provides patients with local access to advanced diagnostic imaging without the burden of extensive travel, particularly for rural regions. This scanner has also being approved for Medicare rebates, which allows bulk billing for patients diagnosed with specific forms of cancer.

PET/CT is a form of Fusion Medical Imaging that combines a PET scanner with a CT scanner in a single machine. The development of PET/CT, with its accurate localisation of functional imaging, has had a major impact in several medical fields including oncology, cancer staging, surgical planning, prostate imaging and radiation oncology planning. PET/CT is quickly becoming an essential diagnostic tool for the assessment of cancer and determining the stage of the disease.

The team of experienced Radiologists, Nuclear Medicine Physicians and clinic staff aim to provide the highest standard of healthcare for patients, and look forward to providing this service for the Sunshine Coast community. Sunshine Coast Medical Imaging is located at the Sunshine Coast Private Hospital at Buderim. It provides comprehensive diagnostic imaging services to both the hospital and the wider community.

For more information regarding the new PET service or any of Sunshine Coast Medical Imaging other medical services, you can contact the clinic on 07 5373 2900 or Katrina Palmer, SCMI Customer Relationship Manager, on 0437 898 616.
